Painting Hints & Tips

Choosing the right colour

Before you choose a colour scheme, consider the items in your room that you might not want to change such as flooring and furniture. Begin with some colour cards and swatches and shortlist your favourites.
Use one of the Matchpot or tester pots of paint to see exactly how the colour will look.
Rooms can look very different at different times of the day so think about how the room looks in natural light and under artificial light at night.

Colour can affect your mood so for example a pale blue or green can make a room feel cold if used inappropriately. However the same colour used in a bathroom can create a fresh and clean atmosphere.
Always consider your choice of finish. For example a durable, washable finish would be very practical in a kitchen.

More often than not surfaces to be painted will have irregularities or imperfections. Your choice of paint finish can help. Flat finishes tend to hide lumps and bumps, while higher sheens such as silk can accentuate them, particularly in brightly lit areas.

How much paint do you need?

Measure the area to be painted and don’t forget to deduct the area for windows and doors.

Preparation of surfaces

Never skip on the preparation of surfaces to be painted. A simple rule of thumb is if it’s dirty or greasy, clean it, and if it’s shiny or flaky sand it or prime it.

If preparation is skipped you may find it takes a lot more time and money to rectify the situation.
