Stenciling a wall border

To stencil a wall border, very few supplies are needed. The steps are simple and straightforward. The time involved will depend upon the complexity of the pattern, the size of the wall and the skill of the painter. With some patience, a little practice, and the pattern and paints of your choice, a border can be stenciled by someone with little to no experience.

Stenciling Steps

Step 1:
Wash the wall and allow it to dry completely. Then, affix the stencil with masking tape to the wall in the desired location, starting at either end of the wall. Use the level to set and maintain a straight line across the wall.

Step 2:
Load the paint roller with moderate amount of paint. Roll the paint from the outer edge of the stencil toward the center.

Step 3:
Lift the stencil straight up from the wall without sliding it in any other direction. The clean any paint from the back of stencil and allow it to dry thoroughly.

Step 4:
Repeat steps 1 through 4 across the width of each wall. If it's a single-color pattern, you're finished. But if it's a multicolored pattern, allow the paint to dry before proceeding with the second color.

Step 5:
If it is a multicolor pattern, start over with step 1 and the next color in the pattern. Continue through all the steps for each additional color, allowing drying time in between each color until the pattern is complete.

Step 6:
Keep in mind that paint may get out on the side of your stencil facing the wall. Check it before placing it in a new spot on the wall to avoid unsightly splotches.
